The long history of Ningxia goji berry
Goji is one of special botanical resources in China and possesses a triad of biological, economic and
social values and can be used as the food and medicine.
“I ascended the hill in the north, to gather the Goji”, it is a description in Shi Jing, from which we can see
that the use of goji by Chinese can be dated back to more than 2500 years ago.
Sun Simiao, the famous medicine expert in Tang Dynasty, also mentioned goji in his Qianjin Yifang, “the
genuine goji is produced in Ganzhou City and characterized by thick and large leaves.”
Su Dongpo, a famous poet in Northern Song Dynasty, pointed out in one of poems that “the roots, stems,
flowers and fruits of goji all could be made use of and no waste is incurred”
According to books: There mentioned goji in Products Part of Xuande Ningxiazhi, which is published in
Ming Dynasty Xuande Years—1429. The goji was named ＂tributary fruit＂ in the part of Court Tribute of
Hongzhi Ningxia Xinzhi, which is published in Ming Dynasty Hongzhi Years—1501, Yinchuan Xiaozhi, which
is published in 1754, said that, the best goji is from Ning’an Pu. It is red, big and with thick fresh and was
planted by every farmer. Zhongningxianzhi, which is published in 1760, said that, the goji used in medicine
is all from Ningxia, and every farmer owns Wolfberry Park at Ning’an Pu, Ningxia.
